The Washington Capitals have signed defenseman John Carlson to a six-year, $23.8 million contract, General Manager George McPhee announced today through a press release. The deal puts Carlson’s annual cap hit at just under $4 million (3.96). Depending on the next collective bargaining agreement, Carlson will likely be an unrestricted free agent at the end of this contract, but could be of the restricted variety.
Regardless, this contract represents excellent value for the Capitals. They signed a top-pairing defenseman for reasonable term and excellent annual cap value, and they did it before Carlson has his career year. This locks “Captain America” up at an excellent rate. Next up: Karl Alzner.
