Season Preview: Troy Brouwer

As the regular season begins to draw nigh, day by day, the time has come to predict and begin to take a look at what the Caps and their fans can expect from each player on the roster.  Today’s player is winger Troy Brouwer, who will begin his first season in the organization this fall after being acquired from Chicago on June 24 from for the Capitals’ first round pick in the 2011 NHL Draft.

Recap of Last Season: Brouwer spent last season with the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he played in 79 games and tallied 17 goals and 36 points.  The power forward spent most of his time in a top-six role with the Hawks, as well, seeing a ton of ice time with stars Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane.  Despite this prime ice, Brouwer’s point production dropped from the previous season and he struggled to be consistent.  A shoulder injury that required offseason reconstructive surgery can likely be blamed partially for that however.

Expectations for this Season: Brouwer said himself in July that he should be ready for the start of Camp despite his surgery, and as of now, there has been no news that would make me expect that to change.  As for his role on the team, Brouwer can be expected to be a physical beast, hitting everything and everyone that gets in his way.  I think he will see a top-six role on this team as well, and because McPhee gave up a prime draft pick to get him, he’s going to have a big role on the team regardless.  This should include significant power play time and a little penalty killing time.  For more in-depth analysis of what Troy should bring this year, click here.

Playing Time: Second line; third line; power play unit B.  My prediction for Brouwer to start the year is for him to play on the second offensive unit with Alexander Semin and Marcus Johansson, but he could see time on the third unit as well.  Because of his size and nose for the goal, I think he will see significant time on the man advantage with unit B.

Projections: 68 GP, 22 G, 15 A, +9 rating, 15:12 ATOI.

The next season preview will feature Karl Alzner.
