The Tampa Bay Lightning figure to be the Capitals’ only real challenger to the Southeast Division Crown this year. If the Bolts figure out how to put it all together with all of the talent they boast, they could be an extremely dangerous hockey team come spring, not least because they have several veterans with Stanley Cup rings. Tonight’s game should be a high scoring affair with several of the league’s leading scorers facing off against each other.
Staggering Stamkos: Steven Stanmkos, all of 20 years old, is leading the NHL in goals (13) and points (24). He led the league in goals last year with 51, and he is flanked by two other league leaders, Matrin St Louis, the 2004 NHL leading points scorer, and Vincent Lecavalier, the 2007 NHL goal leader. The Capitals, of course, boast a decent offense of their own, which should make for an entertaining game. This game feautres 2 Ross Trophies, 4 Rocket Richards, 4 Lester B. Pearson/Ted Lindsay Awards, 1 Lady Byng Trophy, 1 Calder Memorial Trophy, , and 3 1st overall draft choices.
Mr. Smith Goes to Washington: If Mike Smith starts in goal for the Bolts, he will be seeking a measure of redemption. He had terrible luck against the Capitals last season, and if Brooks Liach has his way, that will continue.
Streaky Scorers: Alex Ovechkin, Mike Green, and Alex Semin are all riding scoring streaks into tonight’s game. Tampa Bay was the team Green scored against for his 8 game scoring streak 2 seasons ago and was the team Ovechkin scored his 50th against in the same season. Look for the scoring trends to continue.
