Dev Camp Day 3 Red-White Scrimmage

The afternoon session of the third day of Washington Capitals Development Camp showcased a Group A/ Group B scrimmage. The game moved pretty fast with a rolling clock, and several members of each squad seemed timid to get into the game at first. Goalies were tested often - not only from prospects eager to showcase their abilities, but also by penalty shots as a direct result of any infraction. There was a lot to take in for the fans that filled Kettler IcePlex, and here are some of the observations I made as the game progressed.

Jump!

  • If I say it once, I'll say it again: Cameron Burt, a RIT Junior, is a fast man. In addition to his speed, Burt fought hard in the corners, played hard and was difficult to knock off the puck during play.
  • While Orlov found his groove, Anton Gustafsson still looked soft. He, along with Brendan Woods, looked to be floating around the rink trying to find their place.
  • It was an offensive show for Evgeny Kuznetsov, who tallied two goals and an assist during the contest. Additionally, it was good to see that he really enjoyed the competition.
  • Both Stefan Della Rovere and Trevor Bruess showed their physical sides throughout the game. Accompanying their strong checking was passing abilities, which was refreshing to see.
  • This weeks darling, Marcus Johansson, did not have any points. He seemed to be feeling the game out, as he continues to make his North American transition. He did, however, make a couple of beautiful passes that seemed to surprise his line mates.
  • MoJo also prefers to sit as far right on the bench as possible. He spent the first period shoo-ing people from his spot.
  • Zach Miskovic left the game with a knee injury after a hard check by Joe Finley into the rear boards. Finley was immediately confronted by Anthony Pisano, and the two grappled to the ice after an exchange of blows. Miskovic is expected to miss the rest of camp.
  • I had the chance to speak briefly with Braden Holtby, who did not dress for today's game. When asked if he was going to play in tomorrow's scrimmage he excitedly answered, "hope so!" He mentioned that today's game showed "a lot of talent out there."
