What to watch for:
- Jose “Shut The Door” Theodore: Don’t look now, but Jose Theodore is 4-0-2 in his last 6 starts. Coming off a strong weekend showing against the Panthers (2.51 GAA and .912 SV%), Theodore seems to have a firm grasp on the top spot heading into tomorrows game. And not only was Josie between the pipes for the first two meetings against the Isles, he is 5-0-1 with a 2.30 GAA in his last six starts against them. More on Gabby’s decision as we hear it.
- GoldenEye: Brendan Morrison has been deadly for The Caps so far this season, notching 6 goals on only 22 shots, good for a 27.3 Shooting Percentage. Tomas Fleischmann, on the other hand, has 5 goals on 16 shots…for a 31.3 Shooting %. Fleischmann also is 3rd in the league in Goals/Game – behind the two injured stars Kovalchuk and Ovechkin. Washington will look to the veteran and newly-appointed first-liner to jump ahead of the Islanders early, as they have a .222 win % when trailing first.
- What’s not to Laich?: As Wes mentioned yesterday, Brooksie has been a welcome constant thus far this season. He’s accredited for 18 points in 17 games, in exactly half the time as last year. He’s also been extra busy on the ice recently, being a part of 5 of the Caps’ last 10 goals with 2g-3a in that span.
- Get to the point: The Capitals have only 3 losses in regulation through 17 games, the fewest in the NHL. Their 24 points shares the lead in the East with Pittsburgh, and is two shy of the Avalanche (who have played 18 games this season) for the lead in the NHL. Washington is currently enjoying a 7 point lead over the 2nd place Lightning in the Southeastern Division.
- Give it to me straight, Doc: Injuries. Lots of injuries. Here’s what we know: Jeff Schultz, out. Mike Green, in. Alex Semin, in. Boyd Gordon, day-to-day. Alexander Ovechkin, anybody’s guess. On the flip-side, Martinek (ACL), Weight (the dreaded “upper body”), and Okposo (H1N1) will be out for the Islanders.
